Tavana is heading to Texas in October for performances in Houston and Dallas. Check out the short interview below to learn more about the upcoming trip and Tavana's history with the Lone Star State!

You are heading to Texas in October. That's gotta be super exciting! When was the last time you performed there?

I'm super excited. It’s been over 7 years since I’ve been back. I love the music scene, the people, and just the whole vibe of the place.

If I recall correctly you used to live in Austin. When was that and how long were you there? Were you actively performing at that time? What made you decide to move out there in the first place?

I lived in Austin for a year from 2009-2010. I used to play 7 days a week in any and all venues that would have me. I remember how different it was from playing in Honolulu at that time. There were tons of bands going for the same gigs. All the musicians were early for the gig. And everyone practiced and had their sets worked out very tight. It took like a month to get situated but from then on I was lucky enough to be performing every night of the week.

And if I recall correctly, that period was kind of a renaissance for a number of Hawaii-born artists in Austin?

I lived in a place called the Metropolis. Austin Texas was full of creative transplants and the Metropolis was teeming with them. I lived there at the same time as a band called “Soulution” comprised of my childhood friends Dave Edery and Miguel Rojales along with band mates Kyle Hayes, and Casey Abay. Every morning I would go across the parking lot from my apartment to theirs and have coffee and jam and talk about music. Later we would go to our respective gigs. On my breaks I would run up the street and sit in with them and vice versa. After that we would all go to the Met and keep the jam going. It was a very fun and creative time of my life.

What were your favorite venues?

I have great memories of playing at “Stubbs” and “Antones”.  Those are such great venues with a lot of history.

Any artists that you particularly enjoyed collaborating with or going to see?

I used to go watch Gary Clark Jr. at that time he was still coming up. Me him and my friend Chris would hang out between sets. Great times for sure.

I see you are performing in both Houston and Dallas? Have you ever performed in either of those cities before? If so, where?

This will be my first time in Dallas. This is my second time at Texas Heart Strings in Houston.

Do you have any availability left in your schedule during your Texas tour if we happened to have a few good contacts for you?

October 19th is open and available to book. If interested and in Austin, Dallas, or Houston, you can drop my Manager - Al Smith - a line at www.tavana808music@gmail.com

Good luck over there!

Thanks, I'm really looking forward to it! See you soon Texas!

I had the pleasure if seeing Tavana twice while I was visiting Hawaii. I live close to Austin but in the hill country, Spicewood. Would love to see Tavana play at Angel's icehouse, Poodies roadhouse, Iron Wolf Distillary, Crystal Creek Distillary, just to name a few. Thank you!!

He will be playing our house concert series in Pearland, just south of Houston, on Oct. 18th. If you want to see him there, go to www.texasheartstrings.org to purchase your tickets. We are excited to be hosting him for the third time!

Hey! Would love to see you here in Austin. What a great story! Welcome back! To share, one of my favorite places in South Austin is The Saxon Pub off S. Lamar!

Just saw Tavana first cook on show "Cooking Hawaiian Style", grilled avocado with red sauerkraut, and grilled poke with garlic kale. Can't wait to make it myself. But even more impressed with the blues song performed after the cooking. Never seen Tavana before, hope I will again in future when I visit Hawaii for first time or here in Chicago area, maybe? Anyways, the guitar playing on table reminded me of Ben Harper, who I've seen live many times. Thanks again hope to see you soon!
